Jim Dunlop is best known for manufacturing a wide range of guitar strings that cater to different playing styles, with a strong emphasis on durability, tone, and feel. Made In USA. Here’s a description:
Materials & Construction:
-
Nickel-plated steel: Their most common type, offering a balanced, warm tone with bright attack.
-
Stainless steel: Brighter, longer-lasting, and more resistant to corrosion.
-
80/20 Bronze & Phosphor Bronze: For acoustic guitars, with phosphor bronze delivering warmer, aged tone and 80/20 giving crisp, ringing highs.
Key Series & Characteristics:
-
Dunlop Electric Nickel Plated Steel (EPS): Balanced, versatile, and affordable. Good for rock, blues, and pop.
-
Dunlop Heavy Core: Thicker core wire under the same outer wrap gauge. Results in higher tension, increased punch, better tuning stability, and more resistance to bending out of tune. Popular with aggressive players and low-tunings.
-
Dunlop Stainless Steel: Very bright, very long-lasting, with a slick feel. Ideal for players with corrosive sweat.
-
Dunlop Acoustic Phosphor Bronze: Known for warmth and projection, with less finger squeak than many brands.
-
Dunlop Reverend Willy’s Mexican Lottery Strings: A cult classic — lighter gauge but with a wound 3rd (G) string, giving a vintage, balanced feel for blues and rock.
Feel & Playability:
-
Generally described as smooth (especially nickel and coated options).
-
Heavy Core strings feel stiffer/tighter than standard strings of the same gauge.
-
Their plain steels (high E, B) are notably slick to the touch, reducing friction for bends.
Tone:
-
Nickel: Warm, mid-focused, slightly compressed — reminiscent of classic rock and blues.
-
Stainless Steel: Bright, cutting, and percussive — good for metal and country.
-
Phosphor Bronze: Rich, full-bodied, with strong fundamental — good for fingerstyle and strumming.

Each of our formulas is developed with on-the-road feedback from some of the greatest players in the world. At our headquarters in Benicia, California, we take a hands-on approach, running our machines at a slower pace and producing smaller batches, which allows us much more control at every step of the process. We also seal them in a protective bag for freshness and longevity. Every set of Dunlop Strings is the result of our obsession with details, which is ultimately an obsession with quality, consistency, and serving your needs as a player.
Inside each pack of Dunlop Strings is more than 50 years of deep knowledge and experience gained from working with guitar players to further their playing experience.
